I started this gratitude blog over 8 years ago. This sustained practice has allowed me to shift my perspective, and focus on the abundance of blessings that fill my life. My petty, ego-driven, whiny desires still do try to convince me otherwise – I haven’t achieved enough, that’s for sure. Yet, when I pay attention to my life as it unfolds minute by minute, it’s like I’ve won the lottery without even buying a ticket. All my vital organs function perfectly, and I don’t need to do anything about it. I have never had to sleep on city streets. Food and water are always available in my home. So is electricity, and I can always power any appliance, tool or gadget that I fancy. If you’ve ever seen my closet, you know I have way too many clothes (and shoes, yes). I am surrounded by more information and entertainment than I will ever be able to consume. Beauty is present everywhere I turn – a soft sweater, an enchanting melody, the sky’s colors. I am free to roam about – feet, bicycle, car, bus, train, plane, take your pick. Nature is never very far, and outings at the beach are always restorative. Most importantly, I am connected to a handful of helpful, loving, reliable people that I can talk with, walk with, eat with – even dance with. Does my life today match the vision I had dreamed of or hoped for? Not at all. No matter. Now that I stand in the thick of midlife, I am so grateful for all that I have experienced, and all that is yet to come. I hope you are too.
